ABOUT CHARLOTTE BARRELS
BIOGRAPHY
Charlotte Tønder (b. 1965) is a Danish-born artist with her own gallery in the heart of Copenhagen. She lives and works in Copenhagen.
She has been active as an artist for almost three decades. Her artistic journey began with a passion for painting, which she later supplemented with bronze sculptures.
For years, she has fully dedicated her life to art as a full-time artist. Her background in international sales and marketing has enriched her artistic development.
Billed artist
With an intense fascination for nature, she loves to capture the wild dance of the natural elements. She visualizes and paints thunderous storms colliding with raw rocks. Her hallmark has always been the unique light she captures on canvas, often described as “where lightning pierces the sky”. She creates her own stories, moods and adds her own temperament to her universally understandable creations, hoping that the viewer both sees and feels the dramatic scene. Over the years she has taken courses in San Francisco, Copenhagen and Italy.
Bronze sculptor
Charlotte Tønder’s passion for the three-dimensional has led her to bronze casting and working with raw metal. Her detailed sculptures are characterized by a deep sense of humor. Whatever the expression of the sculpture, her unique flair for patina makes them very special and vibrant. Curiosity is her artistic driving force, and her love of discovery and play allows her to develop and explore new dimensions within her artistic work. She has exhibited in Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. Recently, with her humorous eye for bronze stories, she was selected to create a statuette for the Diabetes Center in Copenhagen.
Curator
In 2019, Charlotte Tønder founded Kunst i Kirke Gentofte, a major art project in Copenhagen supported by Gentofte Municipality’s culture pool and Gentofte Deanery. Each year between 8-10 churches exhibited art from 18 professional artists. As chief curator, she carefully handpicked each artist in collaboration with renowned curator Helle Borre. Each church displayed a unique exhibition and the project attracted almost 3000 visitors annually.
The Mayor of Gentofte opened the exhibitions together with the Provost of Gentofte.
