Charlotte Tønder has a studio and gallery in the heart of Copenhagen on the artist street Rørholmsgade. The gallery has been her artistic oasis for the past 10 years.

For over 25 years, Charlotte’s passion and focal point has been art. She is inspired by everything she encounters and experiences on her path, and the mindset these experiences leave in her. Therefore, her motifs can be very different, but there is always a common thread in Charlotte’s work. In her work we find an exuberant joy of life, humor, beauty and a love of life, all of which you feel as a core part of her own being when you meet her.

Charlotte’s strength is her creativity and curiosity. She has the desire to try things out, to experiment and, by her own admission, cannot imagine being limited to just one genre or form. She is able to move from the abstract to the more figurative and likes to use the entire color palette with a fine sense of color.

Charlotte Tønder has taken painting courses in both Copenhagen and San Francisco, California, where she previously lived for a number of years.

Her gallery in Rørholmsgade features works by Charlotte herself, but also works by other artists. Charlotte Tønder is also part of Kunstnergaden Rørholmsgade, an artist community with 15 other artists and galleries.

LIFE AS A BRONZE SCULPTOR:

About 6 years ago, Charlotte Tønder started working with bronze sculptures.

Charlotte Tønder explains: “I wanted to work with a completely different expression and a completely different material, based on a dream where I dreamed of making something in the shape of a walnut. I had the idea that I wanted to make figures that would be cast in bronze, shaped like a variety of vegetables. Many people said it couldn’t be done, but it just motivated me even more to experiment and find a method where I could cast the vegetables directly into plaster and then use the cire perdue technique to create my bronze sculptures.

It’s been great for me to get into bronze casting. It’s so different in every way, not least technically. It’s a completely different world and in many ways it’s very relentless, partly because the process is physically incredibly hard, but also because the casting reveals everything down to the smallest detail. It’s a very masculine work process, where I feel the painting is more feminine. It has opened up a whole new dimension in my art and has been, and continues to be, incredibly inspiring for me.

The working process of bronze casting:

Casting bronze is a lot of work, but Charlotte Tønder loves it.
