Sculptor

SCULPTOR Charlotte Tønder.

My life as a bronze sculptor.
The masculine bronze expression versus the more feminine brushstroke.

In 2019 I became a sculptor. I wanted to work with a completely different expression and a completely different material. Starting with a dream where I dreamt I was making something shaped like a walnut, I had an idea to cast bronze figures shaped like a variety of vegetables.

They said it couldn’t be done.

It’s been great for me to get into bronze casting. It’s so different in every way. Not least technically. People didn’t believe that you could cast real vegetables directly in plaster and that just motivated me even more to experiment. A whole other world opened up for me when I suddenly found myself doing something that is quite relentless because the casting reveals everything down to the smallest detail, and is physically hard in a completely different way than painting. I think it breaks with the feminine work process and expression of painting. It’s been hugely inspiring and has opened up a new dimension in my art.

Hans Felthaus has been my mentor and master teacher and has taught me many things that I am extremely grateful for.

VIDEO OF THE BRONZING PROCESS.

Casting bronze is a lot of work and I love it.

In my video I show the considerable work involved in casting bronze using the cire perdue (lost wax) method.

I show all the exciting sub-processes from start to finish, from shaping my model into a sculpture with wax, to the final finishing process of sanding the bronze.
