Bronze has a beautiful luster and is one of the finest materials used in sculpture casting. The sculpture is well-suited for both indoor and outdoor use. When placed outdoors, the bronze will change over time and develop the coveted greenish patina familiar from, for example, old copper roofs.

THE BRONZE CASTING PROCESS:

Casting bronze is a labor-intensive process, but I love it.

Click the link here to watch my video, which offers a brief glimpse into the extensive work involved in casting bronze using the cire perdue (lost-wax) method. Most of my sculptures are created using this process, but a few are made using a different method called sand casting.

In the video, you’ll get a glimpse into all the exciting processes involved from start to finish—from shaping the model into a wax sculpture to the final step of polishing the bronze.

The cire perdue process is a casting technique in which the mold is lost during use. First, both the arms and legs are modeled in wax. Next, the vegetable or fruit is shaped; it is either peeled, cut, or otherwise prepared. Finally, the wax parts and the vegetables or fruits are assembled. The mold must then be left in a 600-degree oven for 24 hours to 6 days, until the original model has burned or melted away. Afterward, the red-hot bronze is poured into the cavity left behind where the parts were. This is just the beginning. What follows is painstaking and time-consuming work involving filing, sanding, polishing, and so on.

Development

I plan to continually develop new series of sculptures featuring various vegetables and fruits, but also, over time, seek more inspiration from nature. I’m also very interested in applying patina to the various sculptures, and I plan to incorporate more colors into my work. I’m particularly fascinated by accelerated patination—the process of speeding up the patination chemically rather than waiting for nature to take its course.
